Goalkeeper
Craig Gordon (Sunderland): The young Scot was always going to have plenty to do against a strong Liverpool attack and stood up to the test admirably. The £7million-plus price-tag still hangs around his neck, but a commanding performance, only tarnished by two unstoppable strikes, went some way to justify it. Without him Sunderland could have lost by five or six.
Defenders
Ashley Cole (Chelsea): Having struggled with injury in his first season at Stamford Bridge, Cole is beginning to produce the kind of form at Chelsea that made him one of the hottest properties in football two years ago. As well as tirelessly surging forward, Cole also showed that he has improved his tackling, with several solid interceptions against Pompey.
Richard Dunne (Manchester City): His partner in crime, Micah Richards, might be getting all the plaudits at the moment, but for the second week in a row, Dunne showed why he is a favourite amongst City fans. Barely put a foot wrong and anchored the defence well enough to shut out a potent Arsenal side for 80 minutes.
Sol Campbell (Portsmouth): Dead and buried when he stormed out of Arsenal, Campbell has been given the kiss of life at Fratton Park. He made an astounding saving tackle to deny Drogba doubling Chelsea’s lead, as well as looking positionally aware, strong in the air and doing his England chances no harm at all.
Pascal Chimbonda (Tottenham): In a strange game at Old Trafford, full-back Chimbonda was one of the star performers. He managed to keep tabs of Paul Scoles, Nani and Ryan Giggs throughout the match, looking unbeatable in the air and infallible in possession.
Midfielders
Ashley Young (Aston Villa): His pace is well known and was one of the reasons Martin O’Neill forked out £8million for him in January. Young always looked a threat running at defenders down the left and was perhaps the difference between Villa and Fulham, scoring once and setting up another in a 2-1 win.
Momo Sissoko (Liverpool): Steven Gerrard’s are perhaps the biggest boots to fill in the Premiership, but with the skipper out injured it fell to Sissoko to do so, and he did it well, getting on the scoresheet in typical Gerrard fashion. Not only did he chip in with a goal, he did the leg-work to support the front two.
Sulley Muntari (Portsmouth): The Ghanaian midfielder arrived in the Premiership as an unknown force but is quickly making a name for himself. Returning to the Pompey set-up after a one-match ban, Muntari bossed the midfield in the second half against Chelsea, mixing tough-tackling and precise passing to ensure his place in the best eleven this week.
Aliaksandre Hleb (Arsenal): The Belarusian is coming into his own this season. Against City, the crowd rose when the ball was at his feet, such was his impact in the game. Dribbling is his strongest asset and he flaunted it unashamedly throughout the match, and unusually for Hleb, his distribution was also top notch.
Strikers
Nicolas Anelka (Bolton Wanderers): The Frenchman was pivotal in Bolton’s first win of the season, scoring one and setting up the third against Reading. Perhaps he was playing for his ticket out of the Reebok Stadium, or showing the passion he has for the team, but regardless of his motivation Anelka showed that he is still one of the best in the business.
Cameron Jerome (Birmingham City): The young striker scored the fastest goal of the season so far, netting after just 32 seconds against another below-par Derby side. He got his second of the match after an hour, but looked good for another couple. He has shown great potential so far and could be one of the surprise packages of the season if he keeps his composure.

Goalkeeper: Craig Gordon - Sunderland
The Scottish custodian was given plenty of work to do by a Liverpool attack that more than overwhelmed the Black Cats' defence. Despite twice conceding, it is not unfair to say that Gordon's efforts, which produced several superb saves, kept the score respectable for Roy Keane's side.
Right Back: Michael Essien - Chelsea
Once again played out of position, the former Lyon powerhouse showed his versatility with another uncompromising display to help an unconvincing Blues side keep out a Pompey attack that threatened to cause an upset. The introduction of new boy Juliano Belletti in the latter stages allowed the Ghanaian to take up a more familiar role - and almost led to a Pompey equaliser.
Centre Back: Richard Dunne - Manchester City
As City's defence continues to hold up strong against all challengers, Sven Goran Eriksson's skipper was once again excellent at the back against Arsenal. The Gunners eventually got the winner in the last ten minutes, but Dunne was still outstanding, proving an almost immovable obstacle in the most stubborn of defences.
Centre Back: Paul Scharner - Wigan Athletic
Scharner proved his worth at both ends against West Ham at Upton Park as he helped marshall the Latics' back line against a dominant Hammers side. He then popped up with one of the goals of the day, a perfect overhead kick from Emile Heskey's knockdown as Chris Hutchings' men headed home with a credible point.
Left Back: Gareth Bale - Tottenham Hotspur
Old Trafford cannot be the easiest place to make your Premiership debut as an away player, but 18-year-old Bale was confident and sharp from the start. Getting forward was of little difficulty to the Welsh youngster, who helped create chances, while also acting as part of a solid Spurs defence that very nearly left the champions frustrated yet again this season.
Midfield: Cesc Fabregas - Arsenal
The prodigious Spaniard continues to lead the way for the Gunners this season, already showing far more goal-scoring prowess this term than he did last and this weekend grabbing the crucial goal that ended City's stubborn resistance at the Emirates. Indeed, Fabregas was not afraid to shoot and his usual calmness in the middle of the park and accuracy of passing was vital in an important home win for Arsene Wenger's side.
Midfield: Momo Sissoko - Liverpool
Getting on the scoresheet should be reason enough for Liverpool's goal-shy midfielder to make the team of the week, though he combined a trademark midfield command with his duck-breaker to ensure what little possession Sunderland had of the ball at the Stadium of Light did not last very long. A very solid showing in the absence of Steven Gerrard!
Midfield: Ashley Young - Aston Villa
The ex-Watford winger was a constant threat to the Fulham defence on Saturday, repeatedly threatening to wreak havoc on the Villa left. His industry and ability eventually led to a cross-cum-shot that saw Zat Kinght turn the ball into his own net and Young provided the spark that Villa needed to go on and grab their first win of the season.
Forward: Nani - Manchester United
Again, the United new boy was a constant thorn in the side of the opposition and although he, like his fellow Red Devil attackers, found the Spurs defence very hard to break down, his constant work in making runs and finding space was rewarded with a screamer of a goal (albeit it one that Sir Alex Ferguson wants Carlos Tevez to claim). When Cristiano Ronaldo returns from suspension, United's double-Portuguese threat will frighten anyone.
Forward: Cameron Jerome - Birmingham City
Welcome to the Premiership. Jerome was alert all day against Derby on Saturday and had bagged his first goal within the opening minute. He added a second to win the match in the second half and his power and movement were a persistent threat to a Rams defence that is beginning to find the going very tough at the top level.
Forward: Nicola Anelka - Bolton Wanderers
Speculation may continue to link the Frenchman with a move away from the Reebok, but as things stand he is continuing to give his all for the Trotters and inspired Sammy Lee's men to a surprisingly comfortable 3-0 win over Reading on Saturday. With the hosts already a goal up at the Reebok, Anelka showed coolness and class to add a neat second and set up new boy Daniel Braaten for the third in an all-round excellent performance.
