Goalkeeper

Jussi Jaaskelainen (Bolton): It wasn't the best week for goalkeepers in England, but the Finn produced a few quality saves to keep Manchester United at bay, and to just about pip Wigan's Mike Pollit to this spot.

Defenders

Lucas Neill (West Ham): A man of the match display against Tottenham to grab a hard-earned point for the Hammers - who could well have had more with some luck.

Ivan Campo (Bolton): A domineering display against what was some onslaught from the Manchester United attacking force. Slots into the defence this week for want of space in midfield.

Olof Mellberg (Aston Villa): The Juventus target once again showed off his physical and aerial prowess as his team heaped further misery on Middlesbrough and Gareth Southgate.

Stephen Warnock (Blackburn): The full-back had his best game of the season, impressing at both ends of the pitch and being rewarded with a goal, and the man of the match award for his efforts.

Midfielders

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool): The Reds' skipper turned his international disappointment into the perfect motivation, and Newcastle felt the full weight of his brilliance.

Kevin Nolan (Bolton): Like many times in the past, was the force that held the Trotters together in the face of adversity, helping them to what is undoubtedly their biggest result of the year.

Papa Bouba Diop (Portsmouth): The 29-year-old Senegalese won absolutely everything in the middle of the pitch as Portsmouth came through a cagey start to eventually run out comfortable winners against Birmingham City.

Mikel Arteta (Everton): An absolute star. Almost everything Everton did in their 7-1 mauling of Sunderland went through him. The much wanted Spaniard is Goal.com's MVP of the week.

Strikers

Tim Cahill (Everton): The Australian international is back in top form after his injury worry, and was an integral part of a magical afternoon for the club. The David Moyes era continues to surprise naysayers.

Aiyegbeni Yakubu (Everton): Sunderland simply did not know what hit them, and it was the Nigerian who softened them up with his combination of physique and pace. Two more goals to show for his efforts.

Whilst opposite number Robert Green had the last say in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with West Ham when saving a late penalty, it was Robbo who underlined his international credentials after losing his England to place to Scott Carson, with comical consequences, for the Croatia calamity.

The Swede is growing ever more comfortable in the full back role and was a rock in Aston Villa’s 3-0 win over Middlesbrough, however it was his expert control and finish for their second goal that had our reporter purring.

Centre back: Matthew Upson
The bearded wonder is, when fit and at his best, one of The Premier League’s most reliable defenders and Upson helped keep Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov, if not Michael Dawson, at bay in a West Ham’s draw with Spurs.

Centre back: Christopher Samba
Just as sure as night follows day, Blackburn’s defensive colossus demands another place in our team of the week with his fourth selection in six weeks. Rovers did concede twice at Fulham but Samba was, as always, composed at the back and dangerous in attack. Get ready for some serious speculation around this guy in January.

Left back: Stephen Warnock
Chipping in with an important goal and supplying a succession of dangerous crosses, the former Liverpool man was the best player on the pitch at Craven Cottage and had Blackburn boss Mark Hughes tipping him for an England place - timely given Wayne Bridge's display last week.

Holding midfield: Ivan Campo
Marginalised during Sammy Lee’s brief, yet disastrous, reign at Bolton, Campo showed all the class and composure that comes from a lengthy career at the top level when helping The Trotters to record a shock 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday.

Right midfield: Steven Gerrard
Roundly booed at St James’ Park as the fall-out from England’s defeat to Croatia continues, Gerrard soon ensured that the wrath of the Tyneside locals was squarely directed at their manager as he rifled in a stunning free-kick to inspire Liverpool to a 3-0 win at Newcastle.

Centre midfield: Tim Cahill
The first of a Toffees triumvirate in midfield, Cahill scored twice in Everton’s 7-1 rout of Sunderland, taking his tally since his return from injury to five in seven games. Even the prospect of an away trip to Iraq in the World Cup qualifiers with Australia cannot curb his enthusiasm at present.

Centre midfield: Mikel Arteta
He may not have scored at Goodison Park, but the Basque star was on top of his game, pulling the strings and overseeing what David Moyes has described as Everton’s best performance during his reign. Arteta was the outstanding player of the weekend with a rating of 9.5.

Left midfield: Leon Osman
Making it a hat-trick for Everton, Osman saunters into our team of the week after rounding off the 7-1 victory with a stunning solo goal from the half-way line. The unheralded Englishman supplied the coup de grace in a defeat that left Roy Keane unleashing some Fergie-esque hairdryer treatment.

Striker: Yakubu Aiyegbeni
Only underlining the stunning nature of Everton’s win, Yakubu also makes our selection after bagging a brace against The Black Cats. The Nigerian served a timely reminder of his quality with Andy Johnson returning to injury.

The man with a fixation for bathroom fittings helped plug Portsmouth’s defence at Fratton Park and stopped the points from going down the pan for Pompey as they made it 10 games unbeaten. Any more of this and he will be tapped up by one of the big boys.

Centre back: Matthew Upson
West Ham may have been beaten 1-0 by Chelsea, but Upson helped ensure that Avram Grant’s promises of piles of goals and joyful attacking football were not kept as The Hammers frustrated their London rivals for all of 76 minutes.

Another key figure in the low-scoring encounter at Stamford Bridge, the Brazilian may not have exhibited his tendency for a stunning free-kick but he did go about his business quietly and effectively none the less.

Left back: Nicky Shorey
Cruelly overlooked by Steve McClaren as a woeful Wayne Bridge made a mess of the Croatia encounter, Shorey underlined his international credentials against Middlesbrough. The Reading man fared better than team-mate Ibrahima Sonko, who decided to go head-to-head with renowned gun nut Marcus Hahnemann.

Right midfield: Alexander Hleb
Cesc Fabregas may be attracting the plaudits but it could be argued that this Belarusian star has had an equally influential role for The Gunners this season. With Arsenal 1-0 down at Aston Villa, Hleb orchestrated a stylish comeback, prompting with his passes and dazzling with his dribbling.

Centre midfield: Steven Gerrard
The Liverpool skipper has hit top form recently with eight goals in his last nine games and, as ever, was a driving force in The Reds’ 4-0 win over Bolton as he scored a penalty and had a hand in his side’s other three strikes.

Centre midfield: Paul Scharner
Helping his side to overcome a calamitous error from Titus Bramble in the first minute at home to Manchester City, the quirky Austrian was an assured presence for Steve Bruce in his first game in charge of The Latics and scored the equaliser with a header after 25 minutes.

Left midfield: David Bentley
The Blackburn Rovers star shows no sign of slowing in what is rapidly becoming a superb season for the former Arsenal man. The key figure in his side’s 3-1 win over Newcastle, Bentley scored a lovely free-kick and added a well-taken second whilst David Beckham – a potential barrier to his international aspirations – was scoring in an exhibition game against Wellington Phoenix FC.

Striker: Fernando Torres
The stylish Spaniard was a cut above the rest again on Sunday in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Bolton. Scoring his 11th goal of the season, Torres glided over the Anfield turf to underline his growing reputation as perhaps the best striker in The Premier League.

Striker: Cameron Jerome
The unkind observer may suggest that the Birmingham striker is not fit to touch Torres’ boots, let alone lace them, but he was a dangerous element for Blues as his goal helped Alex McLeish mastermind a 3-2 win over Tottenham in his first game in charge.
