Hagi plans to continue as Steaua coach despite criticism
BUCHAREST, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Steaua Bucharest coach Gheorghe Hagi on Tuesday brushed off threats from the club's owner to sack him and said he wanted to stay at the club to transform them into a leading European side.
Steaua's main shareholder Gigi Becali was angry when the team drew 0-0 at CFR Cluj at the weekend and lost their place at the top of the table. He complained that Hagi had not stuck to the line-up he had asked him to play before the game.
"I'll give Hagi the line-up on the paper, as I invest millions (of euros) in this team," Becali said. "I give Hagi a 400,000 euro salary per year and if he fails to apply my orders, then he must leave."
Hagi said he wanted to stay at the club and pass on what he had learnt as a player to his squad.
"I have a job here, Steaua must become a top European team again and I'll stay here until I manage to teach my players to apply my rules of discipline and efficient play on the pitch," Hagi told reporters.
The former playmaker scored 35 goals in 125 matches for Romania and won the UEFA Cup and European Super Cup in 2000 with Galatasaray.
